Dear Friends and Community Members,
As Quiet Creek’s fourth year as a non-profit organization comes to a close, we want to take a moment to thank everyone who has helped this successful year. We also want to share some of the year’s accomplishments at Quiet Creek as well as our future goals and endeavors. We ask that you continue to support us through your personal donations, corporate tax credit contributions, and state grants so we can keep our dream of a sustainable future alive.
The past spring and fall proved very busy as 1,982 K-12th graders participated in field trips aimed at strengthening the relationship between sustainably grown food and healthy children. Throughout the day, students rotated through a series of stations geared towards the day’s theme. Stations included organic growing, worm composting, integrated pest management, nature trail hike, renewable vs. non-renewable resources, and more. Students also loved baking pizza in our new wood-fired earthen oven and cranking out apple cider on an old-fashion press.
Additional programs geared toward youth included our Pre-Kindergarten Growing Naturally Program and the Hickory Grove Elementary Pumpkin Patch Project. We were excited to work with Hickory Grove’s 4th graders growing pumpkins right on school grounds. The pumpkin harvest culminated with a community wide pumpkin fest with pumpkin yoga and nutrition, worm composting stations, and plenty of carved pumpkins.
Students are always encouraged to come back with their parents on Fridays and Saturdays when the farm is open for exploration, classes and community events, such as our annual Spring and Fall Fest. We continue to offer classes on herbal soap and cheese making, medicinal use and preparation of herbs, bread baking, nutrition, and more. Over 10,000 visitors came to Quiet Creek in person or via our website this past year. Another 20,000+ read QC Corner in three newspapers across the state.
Quiet Creek proudly co-sponsored a seminar on nourishing traditional foods given by internationally renowned nutrition researcher Sally Fallon.
Our goals for the coming year include expanding the educational tools the farm has for on-site interactive learning. Funding is being sought for the installation of solar photo-voltaic (PV) cells and a wind turbine to demonstrate solar and wind as renewable energy sources. We are getting closer to having a composting toilet that will be available for public use. We have received funding to begin a worm composting project with a local restaurant, the Farmer’s Inn, and hope to get on board with more local schools to compost food waste with worms. Finally, we plan to offer a summer camp where students explore through creative outlets the environmental and nutritional challenges that face our youth.
We hope our mission to increase the public understanding of the importance for conservation, ecological thinking, and healthful living resonates with some of your core values. We welcome and appreciate any gift or contribution that you can make to extend this mission.
In appreciation,
Rusty and Claire Orner
